In the best of all possible worlds, summer camp is an opportunity for kids to escape the pressures of school, forge new friendships, explore new activities, and find a “home” that will have a lasting and positive impact.
For all kids going to a new summer camp can be a scary endeavor.
- “Will I have friends?”
- “Will people like me?”
But for many LGBTQIA+ youths those worries are compounded with, “Will I be SAFE?”
There is no question that the political and social climate in many states is increasingly unsafe for LGBTQIA+ people, and youth are being specifically targeted by legislatures and school boards. As an ally, one small thing I can do is share opportunities for LGBTQIA+ youth to find safe spaces. Camps that make it clear they are safe, affirming, welcoming, and supportive of LGBTQIA+ youth offer a unique opportunity for many who may need that in their lives.
If you know of someone who could benefit from a safe summer experience, please share our
LGBTQIA+ Summer Camp Guide with them.
